Janice Canterbury

Janice Canterbury has a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Education from Michigan State University and has been with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for over 15 years.
Ms Canterbury is the Project Manager for a highly successful economic incentive program known as “Pay-As-You-Throw” (PAYT) and, has written a user-friendly guide and produced a video on this market-based incentive program which is now used in over 7,000 cities across the U.S.
Ms. Canterbury is also the Project Manager for the “Climate & Waste campaign– within the WasteWise program – working with 100’s of Partners – including Fortune 500 companies and U.S. cities – to reduce both their greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions and their entire environmental footprint on our planet.
To disseminate Climate Change and PAYT information, Ms Canterbury launched an American Big Cities (ABC) campaign (i.e., convening workshops and producing satellite video-conferences) to educate and provide technical assistance to companies and communities on practical operation and implementation techniques such as reducing and recycling wastes, cutting ghg emissions, composting, conducting business waste audits, and establishing material exchanges.
As a vital part of these national promotion campaigns, Ms. Canterbury established partnerships and networking relationships with trade associations and non-governmental organizations, including: International City/County Management Association (ICMA); U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM); Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA); League of Women Voters (LWV); and the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL).
Workshop
The SMART Solution for U.S. Cities to Reduce Wastes, Curb GHGs
and Save Money
In today’s tough economic climate, U.S. cities and states
are struggling to pay for vital services while simultaneously trying to
create jobs and curb their Climate Footprints. But, is it possible for
cities to generate environmental sustainability and economic stability
in a fair and equitable way for their citizens? Good News…Yes!
Join us for a lively and interactive discussion (i.e., among Recovering
Waste-aholics) on how to most cost-effectively and sustainably conserve
both natural AND fiscal resources. Learn valuable tips about the proven
formula for states to be SMART (i.e., Save Money And Reduce Trash) by
employing the dynamic duo of a robust education campaign in combination
with clear, market-based price signals.
This session will focus on the most recent findings for the economic
incentive of Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) which charges for garbage services
like a utility rather than out of the tax base or a flat fee in order to
reward citizens for conserving natural resources.
