Phil Laurien

Phil Laurien is the Executive Director of the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council. He is an active planner and administrator over an agency responsible for reviewing Developments of Regional Impact, and creating regional polices for identification and protection of natural resources, economic development, emergency management, transportation and affordable housing.
His thirty five year career includes planning, city management, and real estate development. He has authored numerous white papers, comprehensive plans and zoning codes in Ohio, Kentucky, Florida and New Hampshire, and guest lectured at four universities. He has been Executive Director at three Regional Planning Councils and a County Development Department.
As a partner in his own planning firm from 1982-1990 he designed over 350 developments in four New England states, and served various communities as their consultant. He pioneered the first conservation development codes for sustainable communities, and also designed and oversaw the development of four such “green” conservation subdivisions.
From 2006-07 he helped myregion.org lead the “How Shall We Grow?” regional visioning project, which won three 2007 planning awards from the American Planning Association and an award from the Collins Center for a Sustainable Florida.
Workshop
Transit Oriented Design and Central Florida's Sustainable Future (1 AICP CM awarded)
Central Florida cannot build enough roads to satisfy its population growth. A balanced transportation system that includes rail transit can reduce future sprawl on the edges, redevelop old commercial corridors and create new urban nodes of high intensity mixed uses. This workshop will demonstrate how the SunRail system is planned to begin in 2011 and the anticipated obstacles and rewards of such transit oriented development on the region's development patterns, economy, environment and quality of life.

“The Green Cities Conference in Orlando was one of the most inspiring events I have sponsored. The management, staff and volunteers at Green Cities were totally dedicated and thoughtful. It was an excellent forum to meet and interact with hard to reach policy makers at government and county levels. I do not want to miss your next exhibitions, please keep me posted. Thanks for the personal attention.”
