Devesh Nirmul

Devesh Nirmul is the Manager for Miami-Dade County’s Office of Sustainability. He is tasked with establishing this new office which will facilitate the sustainability transformation of Miami-Dade County Government and by extension the larger community. This office will focus on increasing the efficiency of government operations, reorienting existing service delivery to enable the adoption of sustainable practices in the larger community, and facilitating the development of new services and partnerships to provide cutting-edge sustainability leadership.

Devesh’s has developed and implemented programs in the areas of environmental finance, climate change, sustainable agriculture, environmental management in the developing world, community-based environmental restoration, corporate social and environmental responsibility, and urban planning and development. Prior to joining Miami-Dade County, Devesh was UF’s first Regional Specialized Agent for Urban Environmental Sustainability/Bushnell Endowed Professorship at the Bushnell Center for Urban Sustainability at the Pinellas County Extension office.

Devesh has worked with and collaborated with institutions such as the US Agency for International Development, the US EPA, US DOE, private environmental consultancies, financial service firms, academic institutions such as USF’s Center for Community Design and Research, and international and national environmental / sustainable development non-profits such as the National Wildlife Federation, Pinellas County Environmental Fund / National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and the Investor Responsibility Research Center. In addition Devesh has co-founded community based efforts including the Sustainable Business Network of Washington DC (SBNOW) and Built Environment for a Sustainable Tampa (BEST).

Devesh graduated from the University of Florida with an Bachelors of Science in Inter-disciplinary Environmental Science and a Bachelors of Arts in Economics. He went on to pursue a joint Masters in Public Affairs / Administration and Masters of Environmental Science on a full scholarship as an Associate Instructor at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University.
